Scout Road, Bolton. BL1 7NZ
Set within the foothills of Winter Hill, Horrocks Wood has stunning views across Bolton, Manchester, and the Peak District. On clear days views to Jodrell Bank Observatory and beyond can be enjoyed. Horrocks Wood is quite a hilly site with a stream along the western boundary and sections of established woodland interspersed with sections of new planting, and open areas of grass and wildflowers. Horrocks Wood has several small ponds and is rich in wildlife such as roe deer, rabbits, lapwings, skylarks, curlews, crows, jackdaws and many more.
There is a horse riding path through the site, which is laid with recycled rubber, designed to be gentle on horse hooves. Along the footpath there is a restored coal wagon which would have been used in the mines in the area. Horrocks Wood is close to Smithills Country Park. Horrocks wood has a car park off Scout Road (height restriction applies), which is open during daylight hours.
There is a network of paths to suit all explorers, from a 10 minute loop, to several hours, taking in the adjoining Smithills Country Park.
